Call for help with interpreting

International Gathering against Immigration Detention Centres Barcelona,1-4th October 2009  Call for help with interpreting

From 1-4th October 2009 there will be an international gathering in Barcelona bringing together people from different campaigns and collectives involved in active solidarity against the borders and immigration detention centres of Europe. The gathering aims to be a space where we can share experiences strategies and ideas to strengthen our resistance to the industrial complex of prisons and borders. One problem we face in these international spaces is language, and translation into several languages often makes meetings very long and frustrating. We have therefore decided to experiment with organising simultaneous interpreting at the gathering between Spanish, French & English, and if possible also Catalan and/or Italian and/or Greek (depending on the participants at the gathering and the interpreters who volunteer). We have access to self-built equipment to transmit in several languages simultaneously throughout the discussions. Simultaneous interpreting is intense work and often people are scared of it, but we have experienced people who will skill share and give support to people who want to learn. This is a good opportunity to learn some tricks and practice in a supportive environment.

We need volunteers who speak these languages to be interpreters! More in-depth training for simultaneous interpreters:

Part 1: Sun 20th September 16:00 – 20:00 (Part 2 to be arranged with the participants in part 1)
